Time Line

Our story begins in 1995 when Top Water Flow AS (TWF) was founded in Norway.

2009

TWF officially starts working with Ballast Water Treatment solutions.

2010

TWF starts collaborating with NIVA (Norwegian Institute of Water Research). Tests were done on brackish water from a river in Norway, but they all failed to pass the minimum standards. Still, we learned a lot and got valuable input for our next successful iterations.

2011

TWF continues testing the Ballast Water Treatment system with different types of filters under different water conditions. The results from these tests made it very clear that the existing filters (those available for purchase on the market) were not good enough and a “bottleneck” for achieving the desired results.

2012 - 2016

We decide to develop our own filter solution. In collaboration with NIVA (Norway), we were able to design and test a new, innovative filter for Ballast Water Treatment. And this time we got it right; the results were excellent.

2017

A strategic decision to open an office in China is made in order to start a closer collaboration with Shanghai Ocean University (SOU), a world leader within marine science. Encouraged by the positive results of our tests with NIVA in Norway, we continue our R&D in China, this time in one of the most challenging environments available world wide, namely Shanghai Port – Yangshan Port. Through endless testing and R&D, we were finally able to further improve the performance and design of our filters.

2018

Top Water Flow successfully passes the test at Shanghai Port with a 37 micron mesh under the following water condition:

Over 250m3/hour testing flow

Testing Results: 0 organism over 50 micron

The results were groundbreaking, but we knew we could do better.

2019

Top Water (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd – our joint venture arm and subsidiary in China – is established in January 2019 and the precision work is now intensified. For the first time we were able to perform tests on seawater from the Shanghai Port with a 20 micron mesh:

A few months later, a second test is carried out, this time with a 37 micron mesh and under more difficult water conditions:

Again, the test turns out to be a great success, confirming that our filters have a capacity far beyond the IMO standards.

Top Water Flow is the only one in the world to have achieved these kind of results!
